The Songs He Sang

Fare Thee Well: Lyrics

As performed by Cisco Houston

Traditional

Appears on:
If I had wings like Noah's dove,
I would fly to the arms of my love,
Fare thee well, oh honey, fare thee well

If I had-a listened to what my momma said
Well I'd-a been sleepin in a feather bed
Fare thee well, oh honey, fare thee well

Oh, I got a gal, she's long and tall
She moves her body like a cannonball
Fare thee well, oh honey, fare thee well

One of these mornings, and it won't be long
You're gonna call my name, and I'll be gone
Fare thee well, oh honey, fare thee well

Of note:

Listed as Dink's Song on several web sites, this sounds like a very old song. It has the flavor of a slave song, a man pining for his true love, about to run off and join her, but with a gal whose body is like a cannonball until he gets there.

The lovely simile of wings like Noah's dove is obscure enough that only a deep familiarity with the Biblical passage would make it logical.
