The Songs He Sang

This Land Is My Land: Lyrics

As performed by Cisco Houston

Woody Guthrie

Appears on:
As I went walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway
I saw below me that golden valley
This land was made for you and me

   Chorus:
   This land is your land
   This land is my land
From California to the New York island
   From the redwood forest
   To the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and me

I've roamed and rambled and followed my footsteps
To the sparking sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

   Chorus:

As I was strolling and the wheat fields waving
The sun came shining the dust clouds rolling
As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting
This land was made for you and me

Cisco Special/Best of Vanguard has this final verse:

When the sun come shining then I was strolling
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
A voice was chanting as the fog was lifting
This land was made for you and me

   Chorus:

Of note:

Woody's most famous composition, in a gentle, rather than stirring, performance. Before the song became an anthem, it was Woody's answer to other mindless anthems. Interestingly, though Cisco ends his "Legendary" with this song, he did not include it on the Songs of Woody Guthrie LP, though the fact that it was on his other Vanguard release The Cisco Special may have been enough.
