Down In The Valley: Lyrics

As performed by Cisco Houston

Traditional

Appears on:
Down in the valley,
   the valley so low
Late in the evening, well,
   hear the train blow
Hear the train blow, love,
   hear the train blow
Late in the evening,
you can hear the train blow

Now roses love sunshine,
   and the violets love dew
And the angels in heaven,
   they know I love you
They know I love you, dear,
   they know I love you
Those angels in heaven
  they know I love you

But if you don't love me,
you can love whom you please
Just throw your arms round me
   and give my heart ease
Give my heart ease, love,
   give my heart ease
Well throw your arms round me,
   and give my heart ease

Down in the valley,
   the valley so low
Well hang your head over,
and you hear the wind blow
Hear the wind blow, love,
   hear the wind blow
Late in the evening,
   you hear the wind blow

Of note:

Another in the apparently endless string of lost love and mournful spurned lovers, Cisco brings the perfect tone. And he adds the train in the first verse, where everyone else uses wind, capturing just a bit more lonesomeness in the tale. Someone's going somewhere, just not the narrator.
