Lying belly down over the lurching main yard as the sea churns hungrily below, men of the Grace Harwar struggle to furl a half-frozen sail during a heavy blow on a 1929 trip around the Horn. As dangerous as conditions were aloft, most Cape Horners preferred the dizzy heights to the deck, where at every roll an icy sea could climb aboard and sweep a man over the side.
